England's Jonny Bairstow was forced to leave the field during day one of the first Test against Sri Lanka after suffering a blow to his left ankle.

The Yorkshireman was attempting to take evasive action at short-leg, as Dasun Shanaka wound-up to sweep off Dom Bess.

But he was struck full on the joint and limped away in agony before having to leave the field to receive treatment.

Ice was administered to the area upon the 31-year-old returning to the dressing room. He came out to bat at three in the tourists' first innings after tea.

As Bairstow rued his misfortune, his England teammates were celebrating as Jos Buttler gobbled up the ricochet as Sri Lanka lost their seventh wicket in slightly unfortunate circumstances.

The dismissal was in stark contrast to the remainder of the hosts' innings on the opening day of the series.

They were eventually all out for just 135, the lowest first-innings total recorded at the Galle International Stadium.
